So, as i’ve mentioned before in here, i’m in college, and own a 300whp GLI. for some inexplicable reason, i don’t think my car is quick enough and i’m already (a month after i spent a stupidly large sum of money) thinking what to get next.
Thing is, i don’t regret spending the money on a car, i just don’t know if what i did was the right thing. My other options all either included a car payment (this way i don’t have one) or buying a car with much more potential, but much less reliability (say what you want about VW reliability, i’ve never had a major issue with mine)
So, i’ve set some new goals:
My car’s un-sellable. it’s highly modded, and has been hit twice. what i put in to the car to make the power is more than the damn thing is worth. I’m glad i have such a sleeper on my hands, but i can’t help thinking,
would i have had more fun in a 996 911 C2S, or a Jaguar XK? i could have easily bought either of those, but i decided to mod my jetta instead. I just don’t know if i’m making moves that will benefit me down the road, and that worries me.
No real reason for this post, just had to write my frazzled thoughts down somewhere. here’s a nice cars for your time.

Interested in a V6 Accord with a perfect* power steering pump?
*Term used very loosely

But you couldn’t have insured a 996 and maybe not even an XK. Having a pleb car that’s made fast is probably better than a fast car out of the box.

Age issue? “Not getting an insurance” is an unheard concept here in Finland. the mandatory insurance is available for all.
The only exception is the insurance that covers all damage costs that is limited to <40 years or “museum vehicles”.

i could have, since we have a very “covering” family plan, aka i’d be insured as a temporary driver, and my mom as the primary

If it’s anything like our plan, just have a young person as a secondary driver jacks up the rates. Even my Miata that I drove for the first 6 months I had my license was very expensive compared to my brother’s Corolla, with my dad as the primary driver (no accidents in 30 years at the time).

i know i’m the most expensive person on our plan (not by much though, yay siblings!) but it wouldn’t have been
that
much more expensive if i had a mustang (i ran the numbers on one, since i almost bought one) for example. Either way, insurance costs would have been a non-issue on the car anyway, but everything else would have probably

The Jetta is your car as well, cant underestimate attachment. There must be some sentimental value there to spend so much. Comparing against other stuff based on stats and the idea of fun doesnt mean too much.
Hell look at my Twingo. Its slow as balls and to most its basically a fancy shopping trolley. But its my car and I love the way it handles and how comfortable it is and how it suits what I want from it (after a few minor mods). Compare it against most other cars by stats and it seems like total junk, but I like it anyway.

I’ve never heard the 996 or the XK described as fun.

Yeah, dumping 9k into a Jetta was dumb. Buying an XK or 911 would have been dumb too.
You’re 18. Figure out your life before blowing your money on cars.

How new was the Miata? On my insurance at least all the cars I’ve owned have been roughly the same because they’re all old enough/valueless enough to drop into the cheapest bracket no matter what it is(1991 4runner, 1991 Alfa Romeo 164 and 1998 BMW 318ti). Hell I even asked for a quote on a 4th gen Camaro Z28 I was considering(because I thought the insurance cost would make it not something I could be considering) but that wasn’t any more expensive than my BMW. I’m listed as the primary driver but with my mom’s 25 year accident-free transferred to me instead of her. Also even though I’ve owned all three at the same time I’ve only ever had one on the insurance at once, the other two off the road and off insurance.

Here’s the thing: you got a fast car but it’s a Jetta. Speed is a temporary high. You need a cool car instead of a fast car. Keep the Jetta as a daily or whatever but buy something like one of those classics for fun car duty.

I think you’d be surprised how cheap you can get it if you lie. I got quotes for Detroit and it was anywhere to $400- $1200 a month and that 400 was as basic as it gets. I lie and say I live back home still, $80 a month. Part of that being home/2 car discount. But fuck thats cheap for Michigan.
A year later they found about all of my (5) speeding tickets in Detroit. It went up to $200 a month.

Buy DSM or Evo. Mod stock motor to 400WHP and let good times roll. Also AWD is way more fun

true, that GLI is my first car. it’s taught me a lot about how to drive well, and has put a lot of smiles on my face. I love the damn thing and I don’t want to sell it, but dumping so much cash in it wasn’t smart either....
It’s a great car for me though, i love driving it! :)

one day, and soon... honestly i would even be fine with a 1st gen boxster as a fun car, but i just don’t want to pay for 2 vehicles right now

Well this hobby is never going to make financial sense i guess, even if a 996 was cheaper to buy it would surely have caught up in maintenance costs.

The two car setup is ideal but the key is to do it with sub $2,000 cars. That way, your initial costs are low and then you can just insure them one at a time and save that way. In college I had a $300 Suburban for winter and a classic car for the warmer months. Insurance on the hoopties was only ~$120/month and no car payments!
